FAQs
Y’all have some good questions!

Hopefully we have some good answers
Should I tie off my bag before pickup?
Nope! Those knots are harder to break down so you can leave the bag open.
How do I keep my bag from tearing in the bucket?
These bags were designed to break down, so some tearing is inevitable. That being said, bag tears are often caused by opening and closing your bucket. You can limit the trips to your bucket by first placing your scraps in a kitchen top compost container and then emptying it into the buckets when those are filled. You can get some great kitchen top compost containers at New Way Refillery. Tell them your with Compost Junction and they’ll give you 10% off the containers!
I’m going to be out of town, can I skip my pickup day?
You sure can!
In your customer portal go to the “Service and Support” tab and click on “Service Calendar”. There you will see your upcoming service dates, where you can elect to skip (or unskip) a given date. You’ll be credited back $3 for each day you skip.
How do I get my free finished compost?
We give back free finished compost to our subscribers twice a year (spring/fall). To make sure we are only delivering compost to those that want it, we ask that you opt-in to receiving it via the customer portal. Click on the “Shop” tab and add the “Fall/Spring Compost Give Back” to your cart for $0 and checkout.
How is my finished compost delivered?
Finished compost will be delivered in 5 gallon, compostable burlap sacks. They weigh about 20 pounds and will be left where your compost buckets are picked up for service. When you’re done with the burlap sack, leave it next to your bucket on your next pickup day so it can be used again.
What happens if the weather is bad, like really bad?
Safety is a priority at Compost Junction. If it’s deemed too dangerous to service the pickups, they will take place as soon as it is deemed to be safe to travel again. We’ll keep you up to date via text and email to let you know about delays and rescheduling.
We appreciate your understanding!
What do I do if I tried to sign up, but I’m out of your service areas?
Compost Junction is currently serving the greater Grand Junction area, with the intention of spreading to Fruita and Palisade. If you try to sign up in an area that we aren’t currently servicing, we record your attempt and will reach out to you when your area is under our coverage.
Can I put paper in the bucket?
Short answer, no, not right now.
It’s really hard to ensure that the paper being added to buckets is good for the compost pile. There are a lot of paper products with wax and plastic coatings and paper towels are often used with cleaning supplies that are harmful to the microbes. When we check a bucket for contaminants, it becomes very difficult to determine whether the paper added is acceptable.
The one exception is paper coffee filters. We assume you are just using those for coffee.
Can I put coffee filters in the bucket?
As long as they are paper (preferably unbleached) they can go in with your scraps.
Where should I keep my bucket throughout the week?
We ask that you keep your bucket out of the elements and not in direct sunlight to help extend the bucket’s lifetime.
Some subscribers keep their bucket under their kitchen sink, others leave theirs in a mud room. Your house and preferences can dictate where you place your own, but our advice is to keep out of rooms that get real hot… we try to make the decomposition happen at the pile not the home!
